Champagne: 2021 New Releases (Nov 2021)

The 2014 Brut Cuvée Empreinte bristles with energy and tension. There”s plenty of drive here. Pear, ginger, cinnamon and plum are all finely delineated. Translucent and deep, with terrific freshness, the 2014 has so much to offer. Best of all, the 2014 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Disgorged: November, 2020.

Champagne – 2019 Fall Releases (Dec 2019)

The 2010 Brut Coeur de Cuvée remains one of the great surprises of this generally uneven vintage. Rich and explosive in the glass, the 2010 possesses stunning richness and precision from the very first taste. Lemon confit, exotic flowers, spice and tropical fruits build into a dizzying crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. What a…

1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Deep red. Expressive, very complex aromas of plum, leather, animal fur, minerals and smoke, along with spice and kirsch notes from the mourvedre. Concentrated, smooth and penetrating, thanks to excellent acidity; fresh and youthful. Plenty of volume here, as well as the balance to reward aging (Avril believes the wine will close down for five…

2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Jadot’s 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques is wonderfully perfumed and weightless in the glass, with structure that is implied rather than overtly stated at this stage. Sweet red berries, hard candy, flowers, mint and anise all meld together in the glass. The 2011 is super-refined and striking in its balance. A suggestion of dried rose petals…

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Medium red. Liqueur-like red berries and high-toned peppery herbs on the nose. Rich, broad, dry and fine-grained, with youthfully tight flavors of bitter cherry, flowers and spices. A very laid-back, restrained vintage for this wine but the wine’s growing silkiness with aeration suggests that it will reward several years of aging.

Cellar Favorite: 1992-2011 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru (May 2019)

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru (magnum) has a wonderful bouquet of pure red currant, cranberry, briar and hint of wild heather. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin that provides good backbone, firm grip and a sense of symmetry and focus, and the finish is saline and sappy. This is like a younger brother…
