New Vintage Champagne Releases (Nov 2008)

Pale yellow with a steady bead. Orange, lemon, apple, smoky minerals and yeast on the nose. Fleshy orchard fruit flavors coat the palate and are energized by dusty minerals and a fresh jasmine quality. An energetic version of this bottling, with good finishing grip and lingering floral qualities. This gained weight with air: I’d hold…

Vinous Table: Hurricane Sandy Charity Dinner at The Modern (Jan 2014)

Both 1982 Champagnes are utterly spellbinding. It is amazing to taste these wines at 30 years of age and see that their signatures are all very much intact. Of course, the magnum format is so ideal for Champagne. The 1982 Krug Vintage is warm, toasty and totally expressive, with gorgeous exotic orange peel and white…

2001 Red Wines from the Rhone Valley (Jan 2004)

Bright ruby-red. Liqueur-like raspberry, licorice and a medicinal quality on the nose. Then quite backward in the mouth, with very primary dark berry and black cherry flavors hinting at great ripeness. Quite primary today and less animal than usual for a young Beaucastel. Elegant, slow-building finish features fine-grained tannins and excellent grip.

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 1970 Lynch-Bages is served from double-magnum at the estate. It has a potent nose. Its menthol component is pretty conspicuous in this larger format. A bit rustic after five decades, yet it coheres wonderfully in the glass, with hints of black truffle, clove and pencil box emerging. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dusty…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Deep red-ruby. Aromas of blackberry, licorice, minerals, flowers and peat, with some chocolatey oak emerging with air. Juicy and silky on the palate, with lovely clarity and inner-mouth perfume to its flavors of black fruits, minerals and iris. Finishes long and firmly structured, with intriguing soil tones and lovely floral lift. Classic medium-bodied claret.

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Bright, dark red. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, blackberry, spices, flowers, tobacco and sexy sweet oak tones; complex and aristocratic. Then sweet, suave and seamless, with lovely inner-mouth perfume and noteworthy finesse to the flavors of blackberry, cherry and flowers. Finishes long and sweet, with noble tannins for the year. Not a big wine but one…
