Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet, beautifully defined with pure red berry fruit, kirsch, orange pith and just a touch of warm bricks. Maybe just a tiny bit of alcoholic warmth, but in keeping with the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine delineation, fresh with the…

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru really puts the Bonnes-Mares in its place this year. The bouquet is harmonious and precise, a mélange of red and black fruit with crushed stone and pressed rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, perfect acidity and an elegant, understated finish. Superb.

2018 Burgundy: Confounded Expectations (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village has an outgoing bouquet of blackberry, wild hedgerow, heather and woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, darker fruit than expected and traces of black tea and undergrowth toward the composed finish. Very fine.

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, the only vineyard not affected by frost, is showing some reduction on the nose, but even so, it is missing the same fruit intensity as some of Mugnier’s other 2016s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, moderate weight, lightly spiced on the entry with a more structured finish that…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(not affected by frost; this vineyard features the youngest average vine age of the estate): Good medium red. Expressive aromas of red plum, redcurrant, mocha, underbrush and brown spices. A step up in juiciness from the Fuées but still with a chocolatey nuance to the flavors of plum, spices and earth. Finishes ripe and sweet,…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a dense nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, camphor, and touches of violet petals, still quite tight at this very early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe tannins, quite plush, a little grainy in texture with a candied, cassis and black plum finish. It still…
