Argentina on the Couch: Malbec, Terroir and Other Trends (Nov 2021)

The 2019 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae is made with grapes from parcel 6 of the Adrianna Vineyard, Uco Valley, planted in Gualtallary at a height of 4,400 feet and aged for 18 months in new and second use French barrels. The pure, intense and precisely judged nose offers delicate fruit such as sweet and…

Argentina: Making It Work with Resilience and Stylistic Ingenuity (Nov 2022)

The 2019 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita from the Uco Valley was aged in concrete. A vivid purple in the glass. The compact nose presents hints of fresh plum, blackberry and pinches of herbs such as thyme and bay leaf before floral violet and lavender aromas begin to develop. On the palate, it’s similarly compact with…

1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Saturated ruby. Port-like aromas of surmaturite A huge and rather backward wine that comes across as high in alcohol and very dry. Today I much prefer the balance of the Cuvee Prestige as this is rather sullen, with its fruit in the deep background. Perhaps a bit too powerful for its own good; more may…

Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)

The 2015 Sassicaia is incredibly elegant, perfumed and light on its feet. It has become even more wonderfully refined since I last tasted it. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead into a core of sweet red and purplish berry fruit. When it was younger, the 2015 was quite potent. Today, my impression is that, while…

Vertical Tasting of the Nicolás Catena Zapata 1997-2012 (Oct 2016)

(14% alcohol; 5.8 g/l acidity; 3.72 pH): Full medium red. Vibrant, expressive scents of cassis, black cherry, licorice and violet. Densely packed and quite firmly built, conveying terrific juicy intensity and a restrained sweetness to its youthful dark fruit flavors. Some peppery acidity gives this very penetrating wine a slight leanness. With its firm vertebral…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Langoa-Barton is pliant, open-knit and succulent. Sweet red berry, tobacco, licorice and dried flowers all develop nicely, but it is the wine’s midpalate juiciness and suppleness that stand out. The oak and tannins could use a bit more time to settle down. Otherwise, this is very nicely done. Tasted two times.
