A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Le Petit Mouton has a classic smoke and cigar box scented bouquet with more undergrowth scents than I was expecting given the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive balance, enticing cedar-infused black fruit with pencil lead and sage towards the composed and quite persistent finish. This is evolving into an…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Purple ruby. Sexy aromas of dark plum and cassis complicated by vanilla and minerals. Fresh and pure in the mouth, with a lively, delicately spicy blackberry flavor dominating. Finishes with very good length. This charming, classy wine may not be long-lived, but should offer great early drinking. Made by the energetic Claire Villars, wife of…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and musky game, with a strong leafy, herbal component. Offers moderate fruit intensity and density but comes across as a bit lean and green, even pinched for the year. Finishes slightly green and dry, with decent length. Lacks the dimension for a higher score.

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Saturated medium ruby. Inky cassis, black raspberry, graphite and pungent minerality on the very ripe nose. Dense, rich and silky, with a brooding inky minerality and an almost liqueur-like dark fruit sweetness leavened by a savory peppery element. This very ripe, deep and concentrated wine boasts wonderful lushness without any undue weight thanks to its…

Amarone: New Releases (May 2017)

Moderately saturated ruby-red. Dark plums, botanical herbs, and sweet pipe tobacco on the perfumed nose. Then ripe, dense and suave, with nicely focused dark plum and spicy flavors. The finish is very long, refine and pure. This is slightly lighter in style than usual for a Dal Forno Amarone, but is very much in the…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Cheval Blanc (Oct 2011)

(49 h/h): Very bright red. Ripe red cherry, plums macerated in alcohol and a floral element on the delicate nose. Then rich, ripe and dense in the mouth, with strongly saline, persistent flavors of dark berries, spice cake, leather and cocoa. There’s lovely sweetness to this wine, but also a slightly funky hint of earthiness…
