The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

(55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 5% cabernet franc): Good bright red-ruby. Pungent, expressive nose offers black raspberry, blueberry, bitter chocolate, leather and flowers. Densely packed, juicy and sweet, with excellent inner-mouth energy to the black raspberry and mineral flavors complicated by sexy smoky oak. Lovely ripeness and vinosity here. Finishes with substantial firm tannins…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Latour à Pomerol is a knock-out. Fresh, beautifully perfumed and classy, the 2005 is so impressive. It’s not the biggest or richest Pomerol out there, that is for sure. Readers will find a gracious, understated Pomerol loaded with red berry fruit perked by soaring floral notes and bright blood orange accents. The long,…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good dark red. Subdued but complex nose offers raspberry, currant and smoked meat. Rich, plump and sweet but with a firm acid backbone and solid underlying minerality giving shape to this rather large-scaled and mouthfilling wine. Finishes broad and long, with suave tannins. This should gain in focus with eight to ten years in bottle.

Cellar Favorite: The Fives at Château d’Issan (Mar 2021)

The 2005 Château d’Issan is one that Emmanuel Cruse describes as “the first great wine of the modern era”. It has more Merlot than previous vintages as some plots were replanted. It also displays more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2000. Blackberry and briary, wilted rose petals and violets are nicely focused,…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good ruby-red. Currant and game on the slightly jammy nose. Sweet, rich and suave, with good intensity to the game, jammy fruit and nutty oak flavors. In a soft style, finishing with substantial ripe tannins.

Vinous Table: La Trompette, London, UK (Aug 2018)

The 1989 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge is a vintage that I have encountered several times previously and certainly has more charm than the 1995. Quite deep in colour, it has a winsome bouquet with black fruit, warm gravel, black truffle and smoky notes, becoming increasingly animally with time. The palate is medium-bodied and actually reminded…
