1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Full ruby-red. Wonderfully perfumed nose combines redcurrant, plum, mocha, minerals and rose petal. Plush, fat and rich, with great sweetness and class. This has utterly compelling mouthfilling richness. Finishes smooth and endless, with great breadth. This wine showed fabulous potential from barrel, but this is the first truly outstanding bottle I’ve had. Drink 2005 through…

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Ornellaia is an introvert at this stage. Medium in body, with terrific persistence and impeccable balance, the 2018 is not in any mood to show all its cards today. Hints of red berry fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and dried flowers emerge with a bit of coaxing. I won’t be surprised to see it…

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Deep ruby. Complex, soil-driven aromas of redcurrant, dark cherry and raspberry are complicated by exotic notes of Oriental spices and soy sauce. Rich, tactile and sweet, offering intense, elegant dark fruit and spice flavors lifted by a saline nuance. Finishes with sweet tannins and lingering saline and smoky notes. This is deeper and fleshier than…

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Haut-Brion has a really lovely, warm, autumnal nose with red fruit, chestnut, autumn leaves and Earl Grey scents. Very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a crisp line of acidity, maybe just a little austere on the finish, but there is fine focus with a delicately spiced, slightly medicinal finish….

2008 and 2007 Red Burgundies (Mar 2010)

(bottled in March of ’09) Good medium red. Cherry, redcurrant and smoky minerality on the nose. More primary and more structured than the village wine, and a step up in concentration. This has lovely freshness of dark fruit flavor and penetrating but harmonious acidity. Finishes long, with nicely buffered tannins.

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Inky purple. Fresh, clean, rather delicate aromas of blackcurrant, violet, damp moss, leather and minerals are sweetened by a red cherry note. Smooth and soft, with very ripe strawberry syrup and blackberry flavors. Offers a fleshy quality that’s supported by the stoniness typical of Chevalier. Nicely balanced, minerally and long, leaving behind a note of…
