Tuscany New Releases: Maremma, Montepulciano & More (Apr 2018)

Tenuta Sette Cieli’s 2013 Indaco is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The 2013 possesses striking aromatic intensity and depth, but is more restrained style than has been the case in previous years. The black cherry, lavender, graphite, menthol and plum flavors are all given an extra kick of aromatic drive from…

In a Tuscan State of Mind (Aug 2013)

The 2010 Coronato is laced with hints of spice, tobacco, mocha, plum, black cherry and scorched earth, all supported by firm tannins. The showiness typical of Maremma is tempered by the cool vintage, resulting in a striking wine that impresses for its contrasts and balance. This is one of the better vintages of the Coronato…

Fleshy and seamless in texture, offering sappy red fruit and floral pastille flavors and an undertone of sweet vanilla. The spiciness comes back on the finish, which features…

I was delighted to taste the 2018 Gruaud Larose, as I missed it en primeur. Ripe and sweet on attack, Gruaud Larose is an especially dense, flamboyant Saint-Julien. Inky red fruit, mocha, wild flowers and spice abound. I find the new oak a bit overpowering, but the 2018 is an undeniably gorgeous and enticing wine.

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Gruaud Larose, which incidentally now comes with a red wax capsule, is initially tightly wound on the nose, offering blackberry, raspberry, touches of juniper berry and a light seaweed note that becomes accentuated with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and a little lactic on the entry, with a smear of…
