In a Tuscan State of Mind (Aug 2013)

The 2010 Coronato is laced with hints of spice, tobacco, mocha, plum, black cherry and scorched earth, all supported by firm tannins. The showiness typical of Maremma is tempered by the cool vintage, resulting in a striking wine that impresses for its contrasts and balance. This is one of the better vintages of the Coronato…

Focus on Spain (Sep 2014)

(90% tempranillo and 10% graciano): Bright red. Heady aromas of dried red berries, cherry, smoked meat, vanilla and potpourri, with a spicy element gaining strength with air. Fleshy and seamless in texture, offering sappy red fruit and floral pastille flavors and an undertone of sweet vanilla. The spiciness comes back on the finish, which features…

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Gruaud Larose, which incidentally now comes with a red wax capsule, is initially tightly wound on the nose, offering blackberry, raspberry, touches of juniper berry and a light seaweed note that becomes accentuated with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and a little lactic on the entry, with a smear of…

Cleaning Out the Cupboard: Bordeaux 1943-2020 (Jan 2023)

The 2018 Gruaud-Larose has a perfumed bouquet with raspberry and touches of seaweed, opening up a little since I last tasted it. The palate is sweet and plump on the entry with lush red fruit, dark chocolate and candied orange peel. This is an approachable and generous Gruaud-Larose, but as I wrote before, it could…
