A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Cos d’Estournel was picked from 22 September to 6 October and consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Apparently the property was very content with the merlot at the time. It has a modest bouquet that to be frank is surpassed by the 1988 at the moment, the older vintage possessing more…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Red-ruby. Currant, black olive, minerals and currant leaf on the nose. Bright, pure and focused, with aromatic inner-mouth flavors of cedar and lead pencil. Austere but not dry. More fruity and less tannic than the ’96, but of roughly similar weight. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky persistence.

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Good ruby-red color. Distinctly cool minty, floral nose hints at cabernet franc leafiness. Good texture and decent sweetness, but the slightly medicinal bitter cherry flavor shows a strong greenness and a dry edge, giving an impression of modest ripeness. Solid acid and tannin structure. Slight finishing dryness. Lacks charm.

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

(75) Bright ruby-red. Currant, cherry, smoke, tobacco and camphor on the nose, with peppery and floral nuances emerging with air. Juicy, spicy and dry, with a silky texture to the red berry and spice flavors. Perhaps a tad undernourished, but offers a subtle hint of sweetness and finishes with suave tannins and nice length.

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Dark ruby-red. Intense aromas of red cherry, cassis, aromatic herbs and cedar. Rich, dense and suave, with concentrated flavors of dark berries, cedar and quinine complicated by smoky and peppery nuances. Finishes very long and smooth, with a highly tactile quality to the cedar and cassis flavors. This Gruaud stands out for its purity, as…

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(a blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot; 13.35% alcohol; pH 3.85; 76 IPT; 40% selection) Deep ruby. A very classic nose of cassis, cedar and smoky graphite is devoid of animal and earthy scents and conveys a sense of refinement rare for this wine. Then very smooth in the mouth, with excellent palate…
