2016 & 2015 White Burgundy (Sep 2017)

(Moreau owns 6.5 hectares of Chassagne villages in several parcels and his single bottling of this wine typically represents 45% of the estate’s total production): Ripe but slightly muted aromas of peach and white flowers. Sweet, pliant, graceful wine with good reserve to its ripe pear flavor. At once fat and lively, this very pure,…

2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

(aged in 75% new oak, vs. 15% for the Clos des Ruchottes and 0% for the preceding wines; the Clos de Beze and Chambertin here always get 100% new oak): Good full, deep red. Lovely tangy perfume of cherry, raspberry, red licorice, fresh herbs, rose petal and spicy oak. Dense, sweet and fine, with an…

Vinous Table: New Year Lockdown (Jan 2021)

Given the year, a couple of special bottles were necessary. First up was my last bottle of 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru from Domaine Armand Rousseau. I had not tasted this particular wine since I encountered it from barrel. Back then, I was not quite as enamored of it as I expected, partly because…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Good dark red. Expressive aromas of currant, licorice, mocha, leather, graphite and spices. Then slightly hard-edged in the mouth, with a peppery element to the dark fruit and spice fla vors. Finishes a tad pinched, with dusty, palate-saturating tannins. I’d give this a couple years in the bottle to harmonize.

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Inky ruby-purple. Aromas of ripe balsamic black plum, roasted coffee, tar and licorice. Dense and suave on the palate, with good richness and depth to the dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishing clean, smoky and long, this larger-styled wine manages to avoid coming off as heavy thanks to harmonious acidity. Belgrave has been on a…
