2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Bright medium-deep red. Musky aromas of plum, currant and tobacco leaf. Juicy, sappy and rather stylish, combining pepper and herb qualities with a subtle touch of sweetness. Not a hugely concentrated wine but silky and insidious, finishing with suave, spreading tannins.

Lower Your Sails (Or Breeches): Beychevelle 1929-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 2007 Beychevelle has an attractive nose, fresher and more complex than others in this flight of off-vintages. Blackberry, briar and melted road tar intermingle, with a touch of five-spice emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and with admirable tension. While this is not a complex…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Cantemerle has a leafy bouquet with light tobacco notes filtering through the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp acidity, very fresh, almost tart in style with a piquant finish. There is a little coarseness, though it serves well as a no-frills Haut-Médoc. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Bright red ruby with purple tinges. Sexy, floral aromas of raspberry, pepper, licorice and spices are vibrant and precise. Juicy, intense and very smooth, with wonderful energy and precision to the flavors of blackberry, licorice and spices. Very nicely balanced, persistent wine with fine tannins and very good grip–and no green or harsh edges. This…

Dom Pérignon in Three Acts (Nov 2017)

The 1969 Dom Pérignon (Original Release) is fabulous. Aromatically, this bottle is perhaps a touch advanced, but the wine’s inner sweetness and textural depth more than make up for that. In the glass, the 1969 is ample, creamy and incredibly inviting. Hints of orange peel, crème brulée, hazelnut and honey blossom in this super-expressive Champagne….

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Palmer is a broody, tertiary bouquet with pencil lead infused black fruit that gains intensity with aeration. This is very classic in style, quintessentially 2010. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a strong marine influence here with touches of seaweed infusing the black fruit. Very well balanced, not quite as precise…
