2012 Barolo: Grace Under Pressure (Mar 2016)

The 2011 Barolo from Cascina Fontana is a pleasant, mid-weight wine, but the flavors are dried out, while the wine lacks freshness, structure and depth. Both bottles I tasted were quite forward, even within the context of the year.

New Zealand’s Pellucid Wines: More Light Than Heat (May 2016)

Bright medium red. Lively, complex, soil-driven aromas of red berries, dark cherry, plum, smoke, herbs and spices. Suave and fine-grained, with cherry and darker fruit flavors complicated by a hint of menthol and forest floor and spice notes contributing a savory quality. This sappy, bright, nicely delineated wine displays a restrained sweetness and very good…

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Il Bruciato is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of the Antinori family’s Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri. Rich, creamy and ample on the palate, Il Bruciato is an absolute delight today. Blackberry jam, chocolate, spice and licorice are front and center. This opulent, heady Tuscan red has so much to…

The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons at Age Ten (May 2022)

Togni’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, pungent wine, with the savory side of the year very much on display. Medium in body and translucent, the 2011 shows good energy throughout. Even so, I would prefer to drink it on the earlier side, as the savory quality is starting to lean more into the realm…

California’s North Coast (May 2014)

Good full red. Musky, medicinal aromas of plum, dark berries, resin, licorice and underbrush. Silky and sweet in the middle palate, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape to the rather wild flavors of dark berries, leather, cedar and fresh herbs. Finishes with good breadth but the edgy tannins need at least a few years to…

The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons at Age Ten (May 2022)

The 2011 Opus One is an elegant, lithe wine. Floral and savory aromatics lend freshness to this understated, classy Opus One. Sweet red berry fruit, dried herbs, blood orange and cinnamon lend notable complexity from start to finish. I imagine the 2011 will drink beautifully for another 10-15 years, maybe more. The 2011 has softened…
