The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good medium ruby. This is downright exotic on the nose: mocha, coffee, graphite and coconut, lifted by sandalwood and cinnamon spice. Then dense, supple and fine-grained without coming across as heavy. Suggestion of aromatic tree bark. A seamless wine that spreads out horizontally on the back end and finishes with very fine tannins. A bit…

In Excelsis: Château Latour 1887 – 2010 (Jul 2018)

The 2003 Latour remains a redoubtable First Growth and a testament to its terroir that manifested such a great wine in a challenging growing season. You could argue that it does not disguise the heat of that notorious summer as deftly as the 2003 Montrose since there is still a touch more volatility here than…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Red-ruby. Explosive aromas of plum liqueur, currant, minerals and lead pencil. Huge, lush, sweet and utterly seamless; this has the palate-caressing texture of liquid velvet. About as deep as this extreme vintage gets. Finishes with noble, compellingly sweet tannins and great length. This is amazing wine, and only its exotic character prevented me from giving…

Champagne – 2019 Fall Releases (Dec 2019)

The 2008 Cristal is one of the most complete, most dazzling Champagnes I have ever tasted. A stunning wine from any and all perspectives, the 2008 simply has it all. Spherical in construction, with superb persistence. The 2008 takes hold of all the senses and never gives up. One of the many things that makes…

Léoville-Poyferré 1936-2018 (Sep 2022)

The 1994 Léoville-Poyferré is a vintage tasted on two or three occasions. Typical of this growing season, the nose does not want to come out and play at first, then almost reluctantly yields smudged mulberry scents. Monotone? A little. The palate is, however, nicely balanced with quite rigid tannins, decent weight with ample vigour. It…

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Good deep color. Thoroughly enticing aromas of currants, spice and sweet, sappy oak. Supple and sweet on the palate, with very good density. Ripe and very long on the finish. A forgiving style of Poyferré, and one with terrific fruit and shape.
