The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Durfort-Vivens has a light gravel and undergrowth-tinged bouquet, quite well defined and focused, that gradually opens with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and a little green around the edges, with a peppery note on the finish. Frustrating, as this was so promising out of barrel, but its shortcomings cannot be…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Medium red-ruby. Aromas of plum, currant, leather, tobacco, cedar and woodsmoke. Supple and ripe but firm, with plum and spice flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. A bit tough on the back end, where the tannins build.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

(a 65/35 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Good medium ruby. High-pitched aromas of cassis, black raspberry, licorice and flowers. Offers good sweetness and density in the mouth, with lovely purity of flavor and definition for this Pauillac. Finishes with chewy tannins and atypical power. A good showing.

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Medium red. Very ripe aromas of plum and musky brown spices; redder in character and less precise than the 2006. Then big, sweet and plump on the palate, with full, mellow flavors of red berries, tobacco and mocha, plus a light smoked meat note. Finishes with sweet tannins and lingering, fully ripe fruit. This is…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Deep, bright ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, leather, smoked meat, earth and menthol. Chewy, brooding and deep, with concentrated black cherry, menthol, mineral and leather flavors framed by a powerful spine of acids and tannins. Really saturates the palate on the tannic back end. I’d give this classic St. Estephe a…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2011)

(aged for 22 months in big barrels, none new): Good full medium red. The nose offers a tight core of sour cherry, redcurrant, mint, menthol and flowers. Taut rather than fleshy, with penetrating acidity contributing to an impression of energy. The firm tannic spine of this perfumed midweight calls for at least five years of…
