2006 Brunello di Montalcino (Jul 2011)

Bright deep red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of plum and marzipan. Fat, sweet and full, conveying an impression of serious weight plus a medicinal reserve. Broad, high-toned Brunello with a restrained sweetness on the back end owing to an element of reduction.

2006 Brunello di Montalcino Revisited (Sep 2013)

Giancarlo Pacenti’s 2006 Brunello di Montalcino impressed for its balance, harmony and sense of proportion. The combination of fruit from Montalcino’s northern and southern districts yields a Brunello of incomparable finesse. A slight bit of dryness from the oak was a distraction.

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Good full, deep red. Complex aromas of plum, mocha, spices, coffee and dried flowers. Lush, sweet and deep, with more mineral lift than the 2005 version. Finishes quite dry and firm, with good grip and serious tannins that arrive late and build. This wine struck me as the most classically dry of Pio Cesare’s 2006…

New Releases from Piedmont (Dec 2010)

The 2006 Barbaresco is an attractive, mid-weight wine. Red berries, sweet spices and crushed flowers are some of the nuances that emerge from this plump, juicy Barbaresco. With a little air, this is already drinking quite nicely. Sweet notes from new oak linger on the pretty finish. The Barbaresco is aged in a combination of…
