Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Good deep red. Blacker fruits on the nose than the basic Barbaresco: cassis, black cherry, violet, tar, minerals and a hint of truffle. Wonderfully rich, sweet and pliant but with firm underlying structure. Finishes very long and perfumed, with a broad dusting of tannins.

2006 Barolo: A Modern-Day Classic in the Making (Feb 2010)

The 2007 Langhe Costa Russi combines richness and focus to a degree that has seldom been seen here. This insanely beautiful wine boasts a breathtaking bouquet, explosive, generous fruit and an absolutely eternal finish. Layers of dark red fruit, minerals, flowers and spices saturate every corner of the palate as this mind-blowing Costa Russi struts…

2006 and 2005 White Burgundies (Sep 2007)

Good bright, pale color. Lively aromas of lime blossom and citrus peel. Shows sweetness on entry, but comes off as lean and slightly hard-edged in the middle and spiky on the back, with the acidity drying the finish. A rather awkward showing for this wine.

Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: 1981-2012 (Sep 2019)

Full yellow. Rather exotic aromas of pineapple, marzipan and toast. Fat, thick and dry, with the marzipan quality carrying through on the palate. More ripe apple and pear than stone or citrus fruits here. Finishes chewy and a bit tannic and aggressive, with a suggestion of imperfect skins and surmaturité. This wine has evolved quickly…

2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

Deep, brooding aromas of apricot, minerals, menthol and clove, with a suggestion of superripeness and outstanding complexity. Superconcentrated, sweet and powerful, with harmonious ripe acidity buffering the wine’s alcohol and extending its finish. This really saturates the palate with flavor.

2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

Discreet aromas of lime, minerals and crushed stone; this smells austere. Juicy, minerally and precise, with a distinctly firm edge and good cut and intensity to the lemony flavor. Solidly built wine with good length. (The Chassagne villages was a bit more herbal in character, showing less density and a slightly dry finish; I rated…
