2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Clos Marsalette is an absolutely joyous wine. Admittedly, I don’t have a chance to taste older vintages of Stephan von Neipperg’s Pessac-Léognan very often. What impresses me most about the 2005 is its freshness, energy and elegant, mid-weight personality. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint, cinnamon and dried rose petal are some of the…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Moderately saturated medium red. Red fruits and mocha on the nose. Surprisingly supple and broad on the palate, with red fruit, game and mocha flavors complicated by sweet, soft spices. Ripe acids and sound acidity give this good balance for early drinking. With the average age of vines here just 10 years, says von Neipperg,…

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Clos de l’Oratoire feels a little flat on the nose with copious sweet mulberry and red plum fruit, moderate definition but somehow a little static. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, fine acidity, quite cohesive with sage and white pepper towards the finish. Moderate length. Very fine, but not as long as…

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright ruby-red. Cherry, cola and sandalwood on the expressive nose. Densely packed, unctuous and sweet, with powerful spice shop lift to its cherry fruit. Quite suave in texture and very long on the back end, finishing with substantial dusty, oak-driven tannins. A knockout for this property.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Bright ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of roasted black raspberry, leather and grilled nuts. Lush, sweet and thick, with an almost unctuous texture and terrific volume. A wine of compelling sweetness and chewiness, not to mention sheer mouthfilling size. Finishes with huge, broad, sweet tannins and lingering notes of blackcurrant, coffee and leather. Classic, thoroughly ripe Gruaud-Larose.

An Exploration of Time: Gruaud Larose 1831-2018 (Mar 2024)

The 2000 Gruaud Larose has a perfumed and floral nose, touches of leather, wild mint and just a little Brettanomyces in the background, though not as much as the 1990 tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresher than the 1990, grainy tannins with touches of pencil lead and allspice. A little espresso…
