Where the Heart Is: Ducru-Beaucaillou 1934-2018 (Jul 2022)

The 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou is very deep in colour. Surprisingly, the nose is very backward in this example with quite intense black cherries, boysenberry, prune and fig aromas, gaining clarity and vigour with aeration (serious decanting is advised for this millennial.) The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. Stocky, but not muscular, this has a firm…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Bright ruby-red, less saturated than the 2002. Very pure aromas of cassis, minerals and mocha, with a hint of raw berries. Juicy, pure and tightly wound, with intense flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate, espresso and licorice. Broadens impressively on the long, aromatic, suave finish, showing lovely grip and class. Finer than Borie’s 2000 Grand…

The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Deep healthy color. Lively, subtle black cherry and cassis aromas, with a floral topnote. Impeccably balanced and very rich, this wine already displays lovely intensity of flavor and loads of personality. Fresh acids give it a juicy quality. Delicious, ripe finish, with discreet tannins. Excellent value.

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Red-ruby. Nose dominated by nutty oak. Supple, sexy and rather full-blown for a young Haut-Bailly, with expressive flavors of currant, tobacco, licorice and spicy, nutty oak. A fairly dense, lush wine whose tannins are rather pronounced today. Ultimately less long than the 2002, though. Sanders describes this wine as denser than the ’99 and more…

2014 Bordeaux: A September Surprise (Feb 2017)

The 2014 d’Issan is plump, juicy and delicious. Torrefaction, smoke, licorice, plum, grilled herbs, leather and tobacco give the 2014 its racy, exuberant personality and considerable near-term appeal. This is an especially bold, rich Margaux, but it works nicely. Tasted two times.

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 d’Issan has a comparatively simple and straightforward bouquet relative to its peers, a light marine influence evolving with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well judged acidity, harmonious and precise with a sustained finish. But it does not want to put a foot wrong and consequently there is an air of…
