Focus on Champagne (Nov 1998)

Yeasty, vinous, pinot driven aromas of red berries and earth. Large-scaled and mouthfilling, with excellent intensity and subtle notes of apple, lemon and toast. Has a perfumed quality in the mouth. Subtle and very long and nicely balanced for the vintage.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2001)

Understated, pure aromas of musky stone, orange, smoke and truffle. Full, ripe and harmonious; not a huge or superconcentrated wine but quite subtle and fine, with brisk, juicy flavors of orange and minerals. Lingering, ripe finish.

Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1921-2016 (Oct 2017)

The second part of this tasting kicks off with the 1989 Pichon Lalande. Off the charts aromatic intensity, silky tannins and exceptional finesse give the 1989 much of its considerable allure. Crushed flowers, sweet red fruit, tobacco, cedar and incense are some of the many notes that waft from the glass, but it is the…

Bring Out Your “Dead”: Pichon-Lalande 1957-2013 (Aug 2022)

The 1989 Pichon-Lalande is a lovely wine, and this might well be the best bottle that I have encountered. Served blind incidentally, it has a pixelated bouquet with layers of black fruit, iodine and black truffle, minty aromas signifying a Pauillac emerging with time. The palate is supremely well balanced with fine tannins, fresh and…

1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Full, deep red. Flamboyant aromas of cassis, currant leaf, tobacco, herbs and animal fur. Sweet, lush and lively; already showing lovely inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes long, strong and lively, with firm tannins and slow-mounting persistence. Earlier bottles of this wine appeared to be a bit more exotic, even slightly animal, but this offers a lovely…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Nines (Sep 2019)

The 1989 Pichon Lalande has a fresh, vital bouquet that is surprisingly backward, the tightly coiled black and blue fruit mixed with pencil lead and cedar. The Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive here. The palate is well-balanced, taut and linear, delivering plenty of freshness and energy. This is easily the finest bottle of 1989 that…
