Germany 2001: Golden October? (Nov 2002)

(from cask) Prum calls this wine typically somewhat reserved vis-a-vis the Graacher Auslese but I apprehend a level of sheer flavor intensity that goes beyond the other wines here today, with apple, honey and spice supported by a volatile esterous note of botrytis and even a prickly Eiswein-like whiff of chili pepper. Impressive custardy richness…

Joel Payne on Germany 2005 (Jan 2007)

Rich golden yellow. Smoky aromas of candied apple, cinnamon and lemon zest embedded in honeyed botrytis. The succulently creamy papaya fruit is spiked by a lemony citricity. This full-blown wine might appear clumsy at present, as its enormous depth is currently hiding its underlying elegance. For the long haul.

Focus on California (May 2001)

Deep medium ruby. Bright, ripe aromas of cassis, black cherry, tobacco and minerals. Quite dense but much more backward and less sweet than the Verite merlot. But this is ripe, layered and deep. Finishes with big tannins that avoid dryness.

Focus on California’s North Coast (May 2005)

(68% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 12% cabernet franc) Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, licorice and mocha on the nose. Densely packed and juicy, with sharply delineated dark berry and floral flavors. Large-scaled but light on its feet owing to its lovely lift. Serious, gripping wine with a long, bright finish.

Sonoma, Anderson Valley and Beyond: New Releases (Jan 2015)

The 2011 Le Desir brings together the aromatics and red-toned fruit of La Muse, but with the slightly greater mid-palate volume of La Joie. Cedar, tobacco, smoke and crushed flowers add an attractive upper register to this soft, forward Cabernet Franc-based red.

Focus on California (May 2000)

Bright dark ruby. Crystallized black cherry, cassis, maple syrup and licorice on the ripe nose. Rich and fat but quite firmly built, with youthful black fruit flavors. Sound acidity and substantial but even tannins give the wine excellent structure. Finishes with subtle length.
