Best New Releases from Spain (Sep 1998)

Deep red. Superripe aromas of currant, espresso and iron. Dense, ripe, fruity and youthful. Supple and generous, with good supporting acidity. Really fat with fruit but seems less powerfully structured than the ’86. The firm finish builds and builds.

2005 and 2004 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2007)

Ruby-red. Spicy red fruits on the nose, complicated by tapenade, lavender and espresso. Very fresh and sweet, with energetic red and dark fruit flavors, suggestions of garrigue and supple tannins. Finishes deep and sappy, with a lingering cherry pit note clinging tenaciously.

Songs Full of Light – Lafaurie-Peyraguey 1906-2018 (Aug 2019)

The 2003 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has demonstrated some bottle variation in the past, although this example was positive. Deeper in color than many recent vintages, it has a gorgeous, expressive bouquet with scents of manuka honey, acacia, marmalade and subtle marine-like aromas that should be applauded for their precision given the growing season. 2004 and 2003 Sauternes and Barsacs (Jul 2006)

Yellow-gold. Knockout nose combines apricot jam, peach, white plum and spicy, vanillin oak. Lush and fat with fruit; opulent and seamless. Wonderfully concentrated flavors of peach, nectarine and spices, with a whiff of menthol adding complexity. Fat and sweet but with lovely freshness and lift; in fact, this is showing more shape and thrust than…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full medium red. Sexy nose offers red raspberry, mocha, truffle and toffee. Sweet, dense and lush in the mouthy, with nicely concentrated flavors of red fruits, caramel and toasty oak. Finishes with sweet tannins and noteworthy persistence. A very successful effort for 2003: today I find every bit as much energy and primary red fruit…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Bright ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of roasted black raspberry, leather and grilled nuts. Lush, sweet and thick, with an almost unctuous texture and terrific volume. A wine of compelling sweetness and chewiness, not to mention sheer mouthfilling size. Finishes with huge, broad, sweet tannins and lingering notes of blackcurrant, coffee and leather. Classic, thoroughly ripe Gruaud-Larose.
