Unrivalled/ Unequalled: Yquem 1921–2019 (Apr 2022)

The 1995 Yquem is deep gold in colour. According to the estate, potential alcohol levels shot up from 16° at the beginning of harvest to 30° within two weeks. The bouquet bursts from the glass, as before, quite Barsac-like in style with white peach, tangerine, acacia and saffron, a touch of candle wax with time….

Unrivalled/ Unequalled: Yquem 1921–2019 (Apr 2022)

The 1997 Yquem comes from a season that witnessed the earliest-ever flowering (5 May) and an early picking that began on 4 September, though botrytis failed to develop, necessitating seven tries through the vineyard over 32 days of picking that lasted until 4 November. One aspect to note is how deep in colour this is…

What Nectar!! Suduiraut 1899-2015 (March 2019)

The 2008 Suduiraut is a vintage that I have not met for several years. It might pale against the 2009 however; it offers attractive scents of dried honey, mandarin, beeswax and chamomile. It does not quite possess the harmony of other vintages. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, very…

2008 Sauternes and Barsacs (May 2010)

Bright yellow-gold. Sexy, vibrant, perfumed aromas of orange marmalade, orange oil, minerals and spices, complicated by hints of coconut and golden raisin. A superrich, sweet, moderately glyceral fruit bomb in the mouth, with generous, nobly rotten flavors of apricot, minerals and honey nicely framed by ripe acidity. Very rich and sweet on the plush finish,…

What Nectar!! Suduiraut 1899-2015 (March 2019)

The 2003 Suduiraut has a strange bouquet with melted wax, quince and wet wool aromas, rather smudged and becoming Aszú-like with time in the glass. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry and starts well. It is missing some precision, a little spicy in style however, the warmth of the growing season erodes…

2004 and 2003 Sauternes and Barsacs (Jul 2006)

Bright, full yellow. Honey, pineapple and a whiff of menthol on the nose. Then impressively powerful in the mouth but with lovely acidity leavening its concentrated fruit. Very juicy and fine for Suduiraut, and not at all outsized or overly sweet. Comes across as very young, and finishes with noteworthy spine. Quite suave.
