Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Bright, dark red. Reticent but very ripe nose shows a liqueur-like quality along with medicinal and mineral nuances. Very rich and sweet on the palate, with primary crushed berry flavors showing more depth than those of the Costa Russi. Really explodes on the back end, finishing with broad, dusty, building tannins and superb persistence.

Antinori Solaia From Magnum: 1978-2016 (Sep 2020)

The 2007 Solaia (magnum) captures all the exotic richness of the year in its luscious, racy personality. Raspberry jam, spice and white chocolate give the 2007 its decidedly flamboyant feel. There is not much subtlety here, but the 2007 offers tons of immediacy in a flashy style that is hard to resist. It is one…

Focus on the Tuscan Coast (Sep 2010)

(14% alcohol) Fully saturated inky ruby. Knockout nose of blackcurrant, mocha, coffee and nutty oak, plus strong soil tones of tobacco and herbs. Wonderfully ripe and full but with a sappy menthol lift to the utterly pure, drop-dead gorgeous flavors of blackcurrant, tobacco and minerals. Compared to the 2007 Tignanello, which currently comes across as…

2008 and 2007 White Burgundies (Sep 2009)

Good pale color. Pure, expressive nose offers peach, lemon, white flowers and nutmeg. Less deep and long than the Referts but nicely brisk, with distinctly delicate notes of crushed stone and minerals. A low-fat style of 2007, finishing youthfully tight and persistent. From the domain’s youngest vines, at 22 years of age.

2006 and 2005 White Burgundies (Sep 2007)

Delicate if rather inexpressive nose hints at flowers, menthol and porcini; a bit less pure than the Referts. Suppler on entry but less sweet than the Referts; this has a rather gentle texture and an edge of acidity but could use a bit more grip. Firms up on the back half, showing a more taut…

2007 and 2006 White Burgundies (Sep 2008)

(picked last, on September 11) Subtle aromas of lemon, minerals and lees. Sweet, supple and round, with ripe peach and citrus flavors. The flavors of peach and nuts carry nicely on the finish. Boudot pointed out that his 2007s mostly finished their fermentations with residual sugar in the low 1.0 to 1.2 grams-per-liter range, compared…
