The Vast Bounty of Central Spain (Feb 2021)

Inky ruby. An assertively perfumed, highly complex bouquet displays powerful, mineral-accented dark berry preserve, exotic spice, vanilla, potpourri and incense aromas, along with suggestions of cola and mocha. Broad, focused and deeply concentrated, offering palate-staining black and blue fruit liqueur, violet pastille and spicecake flavors that show remarkable clarity and are given spine and lift…

A Quarter of a Century in Chile: A Vertical Tasting of Seña (Aug 2022)

The 2016 Seña is a graceful representation of the challenges presented from a cool year that also experienced record rainfall of 79mm in mid-April. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Carménère and 5% Cabernet Franc, it was aged for 22 months in 73% new barrels, 12% in foudres. The…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

Medium red. Effusively fruity nose redolent of ripe strawberry and spicecake. Ripe and soft on entry, but with plenty of acidity to frame and lift the ripe red fruit flavors. Finishes a tad warm but with smooth tannins and a late spicy kick. A highly enjoyable wine that should be very easy to drink.

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Inky ruby. Captivating aromas of strawberry, violet, graphite and sexy new oak. Enters very smooth, offering a beautifully tactile mouth feel and flavors of very ripe plum and red cherry complicated by sandalwood and cinnamon. An in-your-face yet serious style of wine that will be perfect for short-term drinking. The long finish is a bit…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Medium ruby. Cassis, chocolate, tar and menthol on the nose. A bit reduced in the mouth, but fat and full for this property, with sweet flavors of cassis and licorice. Not particularly nuanced or refined, but offers good breadth and ripeness. The tannins are dusty but not dry. I can’t recall the last time an…

2006 and 2005 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2008)

Deep ruby. Powerful dark berry and oak spice aromas are complicated by olive and cured tobacco. Very syrah, with sweet, focused cassis and cherry preserve flavors, chewy tannins and a long, peppery finish. Gains weight with air and also becomes sweeter, without loss of clarity.
