Cellar Journal: Bordeaux 1920-2015 (Dec 2019)

The 1985 Léoville–Las Cases is not just one of the finest vintages from this Second Growth, but one of the high points for the entirety of Bordeaux in this decade. Here it eclipses the 1985 Lafite-Rothschild with ease. It has an exquisitely defined bouquet of red berry fruit infused with crushed stone and pressed rose…

Through the Other Side: Burgundy 2016 in Bottle (Oct 2019)

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is showing more oak on the nose compared to Bruno Clair’s Bonnes-Mares tasted alongside, although there is clearly sufficient fruit behind to support it: blackberry, blueberry and a touch of boysenberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with black tea and a touch of iodine, then a…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(the crop level averaged just 26.5 hectoliters per hectare but Roumier had frost issues only in his vines closer to the village of Chambolle, with one of his northern plots–on red soil–yielding 40 h/h): Bright medium red. Sexy, slightly high-toned aromas of raspberry, mocha and minerals; but a bit less floral than usual at this…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Dark red. A sexy hint of woodsmoke complements sweet scents of cherry liqueur and purple berries. Tight-grained and fine, but with terrific inner-mouth lift to its dark berry, spice and violet flavors. Wonderfully juicy, lively wine with a light touch. Not a fleshy powerhouse, and not showing the obvious mineral structure today of the Ruchottes-Chambertin,…

Bordeaux 2010: The Dry Wines (Aug 2011)

Bright straw-yellow. Mandarin orange, pear, vanilla and licorice aromas are lifted by a hint of ginger on the nose. Supple, sweet and succulent on the palate, with rich, ripe citrus, peach and mineral flavors nicely perked up by harmonious acidity. Very complex wine, finishing bright and clean, with outstanding building persistence.

2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

The 2017 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is rich, deep and powerful, just like it was from barrel. A white of real substance, the Blanc offers tons of Sémillon resonance before finishing with tremendous intensity.
