Best New Releases from Australia (Jul 1999)

Saturated ruby. Cassis, black raspberry, espresso, dark chocolate and toffee on the oaky nose. Juicy, firm dark berry flavors; concentrated and supple, with ripe supporting acids. Nicely balanced if rather oaky. Finishes with dusty, ripe tannins.

New Wines from the Tuscan Coast (Jul 2003)

Intense dark ruby. Dark berry fruit and exotic spice scents fill the high-toned, penetrating nose. Offers a deep core of beautifully delineated blackberry and blackcurrant flavors layered with bell pepper, dark chocolate and minerals. Smooth tannins frame the very long finish, leaving one with the impression of persistence and balance.

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

Dark red cherry, plum, cloves and menthol wrap around the palate in the 2013 Palmer, a wine that impresses for its richness and resonance, within the context of the year, of course. The 2013 is a very pretty Palmer that should drink well early. Violets, flowers and cassis notes linger on the gentle, perfumed finish….

Then rich, dense and suave on the palate, with an almost unctuous quality and terrific persistence to the pure blackcurrant, flint and floral flavors….

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Good medium ruby. Explosive nose of black raspberry, coffee and leather. Hugely rich, dense and sweet, with deep flavors of currant, plum and chocolate complicated by underlying minerality. Wonderfully dense and full on the back end, with broad tannins and palate-staining length. Today, the 2005 comes off as dry by comparison. A standout of the…

Taittinger: Comtes de Champagne 1971— 1998 (Aug 2010)

The estate’s 1986 Comtes de Champagne ‘RD’ emerges from the glass with layers of lime peel, flowers and oak in a rich, creamy style. This generous, polished vintage of Comtes offers exceptional length and a refined finish. I am not sure the 1986 will be one of the longer-lived vintages of Comtes but today it…
