2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Bright, full ruby. Liqueur-like blackberry with spearminty high tones. Then dense, concentrated and tightly wound, with solid acids contributing to the impression of spine. The firm, well-buffered tannins spread out nicely on the persistent finish. Offers impressive potential.

A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Batailley has a generous bouquet with more red fruit than its peers, laced with brown spices and touches of autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savoury entry, quite forward in style with lower acidity than expected, sage and meat juices towards what feels like a Merlot-driven finish. Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

Inky ruby. Red fruits, licorice, dried herbs and cedary oak on the nose. Then dense and fine-grained in the mouth, with a distinctly cool quality to the blackcurrant jelly, red cherry and candied violet flavors. This rich, smooth wine boasts lovely depth of flavor and finishes with a strong herbal aftertaste and mounting, mouthcoating tannins….

The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite linear and poised with a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent. Tasted…

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2001)

Understated, pure aromas of musky stone, orange, smoke and truffle. Full, ripe and harmonious; not a huge or superconcentrated wine but quite subtle and fine, with brisk, juicy flavors of orange and minerals. Lingering, ripe finish.

1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Good medium red. Roasted cherry and oak spice aromas. Fat, sweet and fresh, with harmonious acidity giving the fruit good cut. Really nicely balanced from the outset. Quite long on the back end, with fine tannins. Should give pleasure early. This is 13% natural alcohol, reports Rousseau.
