Focus on Champagne (Nov 2005)

Pale yellow. An enticing blend of red berries, butter and toast on the nose; this settled down to an earthy, smoky character that reminded me of Batard-Montrachet. Full and rich, with flavors of musky yellow plum and ripe pear accented by crisp mineral notes. Really long and vibrant on the building finish, if not as…

Three Vertical Tastings (Sep 2004)

(44% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 13% petit verdot) Medium ruby-red. Flamboyant aromas of smoky black cherry, beefsteak tomato, roasted herbs, espresso, underbrush and truffle. Smooth and fat, with sweet dark berry flavors and lush texture, if not the normal clarity of Lagrange. Finishes with tongue-coating tannins that arrive late. Just now reaching its peak….

Lagrange 1959-2015 (Dec 2020)

The 1995 Lagrange was picked from 21 September until 5 October. This has quite a compact bouquet that needs aeration, eventually revealing attractive brambly red fruit mixed with sage and thyme, brown spices and sandalwood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and a rounded texture. The fruit seems to be finally drying…

1999 Barolo: Brilliance, Intensity and Class (Aug 2014)

The 1999 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto is a knock out. Dark red cherry, plum, incense and orange peel are all very much alive in the glass. The 1999 Rocche is rich, sensual and powerful to the core, with fabulous depth, explosive fruit and captivating intensity. Because of its greater power and richness, the tannins…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2004)

Deeply pitched, superripe aromas of redcurrant, tar, marzipan, tobacco and underbrush. Sweet, lush and explosively perfumed in the mouth. Less dense and structured than the 2000 but more elegantly styled. A real essen ce of Barolo aromatics. Finishes very long, with broad, serious tannins that call for another four to six years of cellaring.

2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

One of the stars of the vintage, the 2017 Valandraud has turned out even better than I expected. It was magnificent in two separate tastings. Deep and sumptuous, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts intensity and power. Dark red cherry, red plum, chocolate, licorice and spice build as this explosive wine shows off its personality. There are…
