1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Medium red. Floral redcurrant, smoke and tobacco nose. Bright but a bit bony in the mouth, with a hint of violet; a wine of modest sweetness and ripeness but good purity of flavor. Suggestion of tart acidity. A wine for tasting and drinking with food, not for competitions, notes co-director Eric Kohler, and not necessarily…

Focus on California (May 2000)

Bright dark ruby. Crystallized black cherry, cassis, maple syrup and licorice on the ripe nose. Rich and fat but quite firmly built, with youthful black fruit flavors. Sound acidity and substantial but even tannins give the wine excellent structure. Finishes with subtle length.

2005 and 2004 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2007)

(this was to have been bottled in mid-November, just after my visit) Opaque dark ruby. Deeply concentrated raspberry, strawberry and cassis aromas perked up by a vibrant mineral overlay and a strong note of candied violet. Sharply focused red and dark berry fruit flavors show remarkable depth and energy and a rich, velvety texture. This…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Ruby-red. Red berries and mint on the reticent nose. Juicy, leanish and a bit closed in on itself, with slightly green flavors of dark berries and minerals. Quite dry but offers sneaky intensity and a lingering finish. This should benefit from a few years of patience. Very much like Lafite in miniature.

2003 and 2002 Sauternes and Barsacs (Jul 2005)

Medium yellow-gold. Reticent but pure aromas of fruit salad, spices and vanilla, lifted by floral and mineral nuances. Wonderfully honeyed, fat fruit flavors are complemented by cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. The sexy oak treatment gives lift to the wine. A bit youthfully aggressive but very long on the back end, showing vanillin oak and a…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Bright, full red-ruby. Nuanced, scented nose combines raspberry, currant, tobacco, leather, warm stones and a peppery nuance. Suave, juicy and complex, with harmonious acidity giving shape and freshness to the wine’s concentrated plum, tobacco and mocha flavors. This subtly intense midweight finishes savory and minerally, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume. A…
