Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 Haut Bages Libéral has a superior nose to the 2001, featuring intense black cherry fruit laced with truffle oil and crushed violets; it seems very youthful. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and plenty of sweet black fruit laced with blood orange and white pepper, building gently to a nicely proportioned finish….

Cellar Journal – Bordeaux to Start… (Jul 2018)

The 2004 Gruaud Larose is a vintage that I have not tasted since 2011. This example, from a half-bottle, shows a little under-ripeness compared to vintages of similar age, but the aromatics are redeemed by their freshness. Black fruit intermingle with tobacco and tar, just a hint of hickory and clove loitering in the background….

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Ruby-red. Expressive nose offers game, spice, tobacco, leather, underbrush, iron and exotic flowers. Supple and fine-grained, with currant and baked plum flavors complicated by chocolate and leather. A wine of moderate intensity and power for this property but rather suave. The cooler vintage character comes through on the finish, which features notes of raw currant…

2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Full medium ruby. Highly aromatic, expressive nose combines currant, espresso, saddle leather and roasted meat. Sweet, lush and smooth, but given definition by its vinosity. Not especially refined, but plummy and mouthfilling. Ripe tannins saturate the teeth and the sides of the mouth on the long finish.

2011 Bordeaux from the Bottle (Jul 2014)

Deep ruby. A heavy dose of torrefaction (cocoa, coffee, smoke) dominates raspberry and blackcurrant aromas. Dense and suave in the mouth, offering fleshy dark fruit flavors that gain weight and intensity with air. The coffee, cocoa and sweet spice notes echo strongly on the long, smooth finish. I’d forget about this in the cellar for…

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Gruaud Larose has a well-defined nose, more savoury, earthier in style, singed leather and undergrowth/damp moss infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, spicy red fruit laced with tobacco and a little soy. Fine tension here, quite harmonious towards the finish, this is a fine Saint-Julien. Tasted blind at…
