The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, earth, minerals and nutty oak. Supple, smooth and fat, but with some edgy acidity yet to be absorbed. Lacks the dimension of the young 2004, but finishes with reasonably sweet tannins.

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2017 Keir is 100% Syrah done in terra cotta, with a fair amount of whole clusters. That approach brings out a more savory, floral side of Syrah as compared to the Syrah Per Sempre, along with a distinctly red-toned fruit profile and elements of feral/earthy intensity that are quite intriguing. There is just a…

New Releases from the Tuscan Coast (Jan 2021)

The 2017 Syrah Per Sempre is aromatically deep and so expressive. As always, what comes through is a heady wine that captures the personality of Syrah on the Tuscan coast, and yet the 2017 also possesses quite a bit of nuance. Black pepper, lavender, spice and chocolate wrap around a core of inky dark Syrah…

Cellar Favorites: Coutet Cuvée Madame (Jan 2019)

The 1989 Coutet Cuvée Madame is a vintage that I have encountered only before in 2011. This was a small production of 1,000 bottles only. To be brutally honest, it cannot compare with its 1990 counterpart on the nose, although it is beautifully defined with melted wax, dried apricot, hints of honeysuckle and a touch of pain d’épices….

New Releases from Australia (Jul 2003)

Very deep ruby-red. Intensely perfumed nose shows classic cabernet aromas of violet, cassis and cedar, along with earthy, farm floor undertones and assertive, slightly varnishy chocolatey oak. Rich, multilayered palate offers cassis, redcurrant, plum and some tarry prune-like notes, culminating in a warm, spirity and meaty finish hinting at energetic extraction. A big wine that…

New Releases from Washington State (Dec 2014)

(13.9% alcohol, from fruit picked on October 21 and 22 at a crop level of roughly a ton an acre, according to Christophe Baron): Bright medium red. Wildly complex scents of red berries, smoked meat, iron, orange peel, flowers, pepper and olive tapenade. Fat, silky and pure, and not at all overly sweet, with distinctly…
