2016 Northern Rhône Whites: Excellent but Often Scarce (May 2018)

Bright straw-gold. Aromas of poached pear and yellow peach are complicated by orange zest, honey and floral nuances. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering ripe, mineral-laced orchard and pit fruit flavors, along with a suggestion of orange zest that adds bite on the back half. Clings with excellent tenacity on a long, chewy finish…

New Releases from Australia, Part 2 (Sep 2008)

Opaque ruby. Powerful cassis and blueberry aromas are complicated by lavender and pungent herbs. Fleshy, palate-staining dark berry flavors are enlivened by juicy acidity. Gentle tannins add grip but don’t get in the way of the lush, creamy fruit. Very impressive cabernet, with the sweetness to drink on the young side but the depth and…

The Best New Releases From Australia (Jul 1998)

Ruby-red. Black cherry, smoke and fresh mint on the nose; distinctly Rhone-like. Shows some distinctly green notes, including a suggestion of fennel seed. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins and very good length. This comes across as more French than Australian in style.

2007 and 2006 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2009)

Bright red. Youthfully tight nose slowly opens to reveal cherry, smoked meat, fresh flowers and minerals. Fresh and juicy, with sweet red berry and cherry flavors and a supple texture. This open-knit midweight is drinking well now. Finishes long, with gentle tannic grip and an echo of red fruit.

2000 Vintage Ports (Jan 2003)

Good full ruby. Expressive aromas of black fruits, violet and nuts. Sweet, fat and dense, with rich, slightly medicinal dark berry and shoe polish flavors. Builds nicely toward the back, finishing with smooth but firm tannins, a note of dark chocolate and a touch of youthful austerity.

2009 Vintage Ports (Nov 2012)

Full, deep, saturated ruby. The aromas of plum, cherry and licorice show an almost roasted ripeness. Large-scaled, superripe and verging on exotic; the wine’s huge tannins are buffered by very sweet, deep black cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. I find this port a bit blurry compared to the vintage’s best examples. Tasted three times,…
