Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

My feeling about the 2018 Réserve de la Comtesse is pretty much the same as it was when I first tasted it en primeur. It is an attractive, gracious wine with plenty of immediacy and appeal, but not the depth of some previous editions. I imagine that mostly reflects the significant presence of young vine…

The Future’s Definitely Not What It Was: Bordeaux 2018 (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Réserve de Pichon Comtesse has undergone a discreet change of name since the 2017 vintage. What has not changed is that it’s a knockout Second Label. It ladles out gorgeous scents of blackberry mixed with iodine and violets, just as it did from barrel. The palate is quite rich and generous, with saturated,…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Potensac has a high-toned, airy bouquet with balsamic and Hoisin infusing the black fruit. The palate is well defined with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. There is something just a little “Oriental” about the style of this Potensac that delivers impressive body and grip on the finish. Very fine. Tasted…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Potensac has an attractive nose of brambly red fruit mixed with cedar and light tobacco aromas. The palate has a soft entry with sweet red cherries and wild strawberry, although strangely this bottle seems to lack backbone and grip towards the finish. Perplexing showing. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright red-ruby. Cherry liqueur, cedar and herbs on the nose. Smooth and fine-grained, with red fruit flavors lifted by spices and herbs. Possesses good stuffing but this is fairly tannic, even a bit dry with air, in light of its substantial merlot component of just over 50%.

2003 Vintage Ports (Jan 2006)

Saturated deep ruby. Sweet aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice, molasses, minerals, toffee and violet. Dense, sweet and pliant, with outstanding precision and depth of flavor. Like the Silval, this boasts a seductively creamy texture. The explosive, mounting finish offers a fine dusting of ripe, suave tannins and great breadth. Deceptively easy to taste today…
