Mother & Child: La Lagune 1962 – 2015 (Apr 2018)

The 2005 La Lagune has an attractive bouquet with plenty of blackberry, raspberry, minerals and dried flowers, the oak neatly integrated. This blossoms nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, just a little chewiness on the front end but considerable weight and concentration at the back. Like many 2005s…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of currant, mocha, tobacco and smoke, complemented by sweet, nutty oak. Lush, sweet and seamless; quite full for La Lagune. This generous, impressively concentrated wine finishes with sweet tannins, a whiplash of flavor and real mouthcoating breadth. I underrated this two years ago.

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 2006 Cos d’Estournel, for my mind, has always been leagues above its rival, Montrose, principally because its rival took a rare misstep in this vintage. The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Good deep ruby-red. Expressive aromas of dark raspberry, smoked meat, black olive, iron, smoke and tobacco. Lush, broad and sweet, with a deep smoky, meaty sweetness and outstanding palate coverage. For all its breadth and silkiness, there’s no shortage of energy and definition. Finishes impressively long, with chewy, sweet tannins that dust the front teeth.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 1999)

Complex nose combines high-pitched lemon drop and candied lime notes with lower-toned, toffeed suggestions of yeast autolysis. Very dry and assertive in the mouth, with a strong spicy character. Offers excellent flavor intensity with no excess weight. Youthfully fresh, minerally and still evolving. Would make a perfect accompaniment to raw shellfish. Also tasted: NV Brut…
