The 2014 & 2013 White Burgundies (Sep 2015)

(ready to bottle): Bright, light yellow. Aromas of lemon drop, pineapple and wet stone. Dense and sappy but not austere, showing serious thickness of texture to its urgent flavors of peach, pineapple and minerals. Finishes firm and extremely long but without obvious phenolic character. This is 2010-like in quality but not at all hard. (I…

1999 and 1998 White Burgundies (Sep 2000)

Peach skin color. Initially mute nose opened to show aromas of honey, pear, and vanilla. Offers decent richness and flavors of peach, lemon and spice, but comes across as a bit phenolic and hot, with some streaky acidity.

Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio 1962-2017 (Apr 2023)

The 1968 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is an exotic beauty. Cinnamon, mulling spices, rosewater, mint and sweet dried cherry soar out of the glass. Deep and translucent, with all the nuance of an aged wine, the 1968 is utterly captivating. I adore its sweetness, inner perfume and exquisite beauty. Soft, silky contours linger on…

Vertical Tasting of Castello di Monsanto’s Chianti Classico Il Poggio Riserva (Feb 2013)

(90% sangiovese, 10% canaiolo nero and colorino del Valdarno; pH 3.36; total acidity 5.90 g/l; dry extract 32.5 g/l; 13.1% alcohol): Amber red. Mesmerizingly beautiful, highly complex aromas of peach, raspberry jelly, red cherry, nail polish, orange peel, cloves, caramel, and chestnut; less marked by chestnut notes than the 1977. Very dense and full, with…

The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Bright medium red. Lovely ineffable perfume of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers, plus a darker suggestion of blackberry. Boasts great intensity to its flavors of red and black fruits and flowers, with captivating minerality and perfectly integrated acidity giving the wine outstanding inner-mouth tension without any hardness. Firm, even, late-arriving tannins frame the fruit…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, which contains 15% whole bunches, has a wonderful bouquet with dark berry fruit mixed with Earl Grey and touches of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine delineation, cohesive with a compelling edginess on the finish that compels you back for another sip. Outstanding.
