2007 and 2006 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2009)

Ruby-red. Ripe cherry and dark berries on the nose, with complicating smokiness and a hint of cola. Very rich, weighty dark berry flavors are accented and framed by garrigue and fine-grained tannins. The cola note repeats on the long, gently chewy finish. This could handle a grilled hunk of red meat with ease.

Vertical Tasting of Trimbach’s Riesling Frederic Emile (Sep 2013)

(12.8% alcohol; 8.2 g/l total acidity; 3.04 pH; 6 g/l residual sugar): Pale straw-green. Delicate nose offers notes of fresh herbs (oregano, rosemary), green apple, lime and pear, with the green edge increasing with aeration. Then richer and fresher on the palate, showing lovely balance and precise minerality to the rich apple and apricot flavors….

2004 Alsace Wines (Nov 2006)

Pale, green-tinged color. Exotic pineapple and coconut notes are in harmony with steelier citrus peel and white flower aromas. Pungent, minerally and intense, with superb stony cut to the flavors of pink grapefruit and pineapple. Finishes with a whiplash of citrus flavor that mounts subtly and really stains the palate. This one in particular showed…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed, terroir-driven aromas and flavors of redcurrant, licorice, iron, cinders, woodsmoke, minerals and pepper, plus a whiff of meat. At once dense and suave, with herbal and peppery nuances contributing to the wine’s impression of insinuating vinosity and inner-mouth aromatic character. Almost rustic in its soil tones but not in its refined texture….

The Forecast for Tokaj (Sep 2001)

Here we have an improbable superconcentrate of blueberry, strawberry and raspberry. Exhilarating and extraordinarily vivid and long. 2 stars.

A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc offers more complexity on the nose than the L’Esprit, with scents of yellow fruit, melon and lime. The palate is well balanced with texture, notes of peach skin, pear and a dash of stem ginger, leading to a brisk harmonious finish. Although it does not rank among the best…
