The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Good red-ruby. Black fruits, licorice and shoe polish, with a light roasted note. Then dry, inky and penetrating, with medicinal black fruits and nutty oak showing. Finishes with dusty, even tannins and an edge of acidity. Classic, rather austere Pauillac, with moderate texture and ripeness.

2003 and 2002 Red Burgundies (Mar 2005)

Bright full red. Deeply pitched aromas of red berries, red cherry, coffee, tobacco and truffley underbrush. Quite closed today, with primary fruit in a suppressed stage. An edge of acidity carries through to the slightly drying finish, but the tannins are on the light side.

Barbaresco – Out of the Shadows: The 2016s & 2015s (Oct 2018)

Gaja’s 2015 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2015 exudes class from the very first taste. Today, the aromatics are not especially open or expressive, but it is the wine’s depth and overall sense of harmony that really carry the day. Hints of orange peel, spice and rosewater give the 2015 an exotic…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Good full red-ruby. Very ripe, musky aromas of black plum, currant, menthol, dark chocolate, mocha and meat; less pristine than the 2006 but rather youthfully subdued today. Then lush and fat but not overly sweet in the mouth, with a nice balance between ripe fruit and harmonious acidity. A full, broad wine that builds slowly…

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a wine from the château’s less brilliant period. In this tasting, it is dark, heavy and clumsy. All that said, the 2005 has aged relatively well, there is just not much complexity to speak of. Muted, unfocused aromatics and dull fruit are penalizing. It is truly remarkable to…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, licorice and spice are all amped up in the BriO, Cantenac Brown’s second wine. Expressive floral and spice notes add attractive lift throughout. Pliant, open-knit and inviting, the 2015 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years.
