Vinous Icons: Roederer – Four Decades of Cristal & Cristal Rosé (Nov 2024)

The 2004 Cristal is nuanced and classy right out of the gate. Hints of lemon confit, marzipan, tangerine oil, spice and chamomile are all suggestive of a Champagne that has arrived at its first inflection point of early maturity. The interplay of slightly more mature notes with a good deal of freshness makes for an…

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Medium red. High-pitched nose dominated by fresh raspberry. Juicy and pure but youthfully backward, with notes of red fruits and stone. Perfumed in the mouth but less showy today than the village wine. A bit tough on the back end and in need of at least three or four years of patience.

Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 1997 Pichon-Baron has a light bouquet of dusty black fruit, rather leathery and missing a little definition. It has fatigued since I last tasted it. 1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Dullish ruby-red. Aromas of currant, leather, smoked meat and dill. Sweet plummy flavors in the mouth; offers good vinosity and a rather easygoing structure. Finishes with late notes of pepper and leather.

New Releases from Australia, Part 2 (Sep 2009)

Deep ruby-red. Sexy aromas of blackberry, blueberry, incense, dried flowers, cola and vanilla. Lush, creamy and sweet, offering deep dark berry compote flavors, velvety texture and mounting spiciness. The sweet dark berry notes echo through a strikingly long, juicy and focused finish. Bet on this to improve for at least another decade but there’s plenty…

Ornellaia: A Major Retrospective 1985-2006 (Dec 2009)

The 1988 Ornellaia (magnum) shows a touch more complexity and delineation than the 1985 in its layers of dark fruit, herbs, licorice, minerals and spices, with a surprising level of freshness and firmness. It is a beautiful Ornellaia with several years of fine drinking ahead. The 1988 Ornellaia is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and…
