A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 2013 Palmer has an able nose, mainly red fruit, forest floor and cigar humidor, missing Palmer’s usual exuberance and extrovert nature, but well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like entry. Riper and more energetic than the Rauzan-Ségla, lightly spiced with decent length. I would happily drink this over the following decade, no…

2013 Bordeaux: Walking the Tightrope (Apr 2014)

Dark red cherry, plum, violets and mint meld together in the 2013 Léoville-Barton. The style is feminine and delicate, with hints of dilution. At this stage, the 2013 looks to be a near-term drinker given its modest concentration. The 2013 is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. I tasted the 2013 twice. Both times it…

Bordeaux 2013: Definitely Not the Vintage of the Century (May 2014)

Ruby-red. Aromas of plum, raspberry, coffee and orange peel. Bright and lively, with an enticing hint of woodsmoke complicating the red berry, citrus and herb flavors. Offers considerable immediate appeal, but the high acidity and strong dusting of tannins camouflage the little fruit that’s present. Sexy notes of coffee and mocha emerge on the back…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 2013 Léoville Barton has a light and slightly minty nose. It’s a little fresher than its sister Langoa but just lacks its usual joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with menthol-tinged red fruit, a slightly medicinal Léoville Barton with commendable freshness on the finish. Enjoy now. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On tasting.

The Innings Continues: 1948 to 1995 Yquem (May 2025)

The 1977 Yquem, my third bottle in the last couple of years, was picked from October 20 until November 26, though nothing after November 7 was usedl. Just 30% of the production was bottled. It has a pretty nose with dried honey, mandarin and light minty scents that are well defined. The palate is well…

Brilliance in Napa Valley: 2016 & 2015 Cabernets (Jan 2018)

A stunning wine, the 2014 Continuum exudes balance and class. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, mocha, menthol and rose petal infuse this beautifully layered, fragrant wine. The 2014 is layered and nuanced to the core, all while maintaining sublime finesse. At the outset, the 2014 is gracious and light on it its feet, but time and…
