2007 and 2006 Red Burgundies (Mar 2009)

(the only Nuits-Saint-Georges village bottling in 2006, including fruit from Allots, Bas de Combe and Laviere) Good medium red. Deep aromas of black fruits, smoke, clove and mocha, plus a whiff of leather. Then surprisingly firm in the mouth, with lovely floral lift (these vines are all on the Vosne side of the village). Finishes…

The Lord Giveth…Burgundy 2023 (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Village is a blend of four or five parcels. This is already quite seductive with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes on the well-defined nose. The palate is well balanced, fresh and poised with a keen line of acidity and a malic finale of green apple and pear. The 2023 doesn't…

Vinous Table: Akoko, London, UK (Sep 2024)

The 2019 Syrah from Boekenhoutskloof was a worthy follow-up to the Tinta Barocca. It remains youthful on the nose. More red fruit tinged with wilted violet and peony, it gains fruit intensity and incense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and an insistent grip, perhaps not quite as “caressing” as before, yet…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Beaune (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chênes (Rouge), coming from tank, feels very tight and a little broody on the nose, maybe because it had just been transferred. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy, ripe red and black fruit, good acidity with a rounded, dark cherry and blackcurrant finish that feels silky smooth. Enjoy this over the…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of plum and redcurrant. Plump, lush and sweet; in a distinctly soft, chunky style with modest nuance. Finishes with easygoing tannins.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Monthélie Aux Fournereaux has quite a high-toned bouquet with iodine-tinged red and blue fruit that feel quite exuberant. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite saturated tannins. This feels quite candied in style, maybe just a little too sweet on the finish? I suspect it will muster more composure once in bottle.
