2022 Sonoma Preview: A First Look (Jan 2024)

The 2021 Chardonnay Charles Heintz Vineyard is a super-classic wine off this site. Hints of tropical fruit, mint, pineapple, apricot and dried pear convey the essence of Charles Heintz. The 2021 is exquisitely beautiful, finishing oily and rich but not at all heavy.

Piedmont Within Reach (Dec 2022)

The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is almost shockingly young, such is the purity of its flavors. A burst of red/blue-toned fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint, sage and blood orange lends energy as well as depth. There’s tremendous density here, not to mention tons of character. The 80% whole clusters are barely perceptible. I would be in…

2013 Barolo: The Late Releases (Oct 2017)

The 2013 Barolo is a big, intense wine with a huge core of fruit and serious power to back it all up. The flavors are dark and boldly sketched in this ample, brooding Barolo from Grimaldi. All the elements are very nicely balanced. Readers should expect a rich, fruit-driven 2013 with plenty of near and…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. – Antonio…

Best New Releases from Sonoma and Beyond (May 2019)

The 2016 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard has picked up lovely freshness over the last year and shows good focus, if less of the oiliness that is so typical of wine from this highly regarded Sonoma Coast site. There is plenty of character and verve, although the Isobel is decidedly understated and hushed next to…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is heady, rich and exotic, with good depth for the year and plenty of allure. Apricot, tangerine oil, butter, white pepper, hazelnut, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes fill out the layers. This is a decidedly small-scaled Bâtard, but then again, we are talking about 2021. – Antonio Galloni
