Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru emerges from holdings that straddle the Chassagne and Puligny sides. Super-elegant and refined, Boillot’s Batard has a ton to offer, even if it is rather reticent at this stage. White flowers, mint, spice and light pastry overtones add layers of nuance. The 2022 is unctuous, but not at all heavy….

Chianti Classico: The Stellar 2015s and Surprising 2014s (Jan 2018)

Podere Il Carnasciale’s 2014 Il Caberlot is all class. Sophisticated and medium in body in this vintage, it possesses striking aromatic depth and nuance to match its decidedly midweight personality. Layers of bright, red-toned fruit, blood orange and cinnamon add to the wine’s decidedly exotic personality. In some vintages, Caberlot is more overt and exuberant,…

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Meursault Les Crîots is located just under Volnay Santenots on limestone-rich soil. It has a lively lemon rind and orange pith-scented bouquet, with a touch of popcorn in the background. The palate is well-balanced with a fresh lemon and lime-tinged bouquet and a bit of lemongrass on the finish. Fine.

Sonoma’s Sensational 2021s (Aug 2023)

The 2020 Pinot Noir Sea Field is bright, nervy and full energy. Red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice, tobacco, cedar and white pepper give this mid-weight, translucent Pinot a striking upper register of aromatic presence. The 2020 is classy and understated. It is an impressive wine in this very challenging vintage.

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village is clean and precise on the nose with black cherry and raspberry fruit, fine focus and just a touch of violet petal coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite sapid and almost Morey-like with a touch of black olive on the structured finish. Good potential, but this may…

Champagne: The 2018 Summer Preview (Jul 2018)

Philipponnat’s 2008 Les Cintres, 100% Pinot Noir from the most exposed, ripest portion of Clos des Goisses, is just as impressive as it was last year. Creamy, rich and expressive, with stunning depth, the 2008 hits all the right notes. Brioche, baked apple, apricot and a kiss of new French oak are all amped up…
