Focus on Champagne (Nov 2005)

Medium straw, with a powerful mousse. Dense and earthy on the nose, with strong toasty and buttery tones layered on ripe apple and pear fruit. This is both very ’95 in a positive sense and very Pol Roger. Fat and round in the mouth, with extravagant flavors of buttered toast, ripe orange and poached pear,…

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Soil-inflected aromas of toffee, nuts, white chocolate, menthol and iodine. Superconcentrated, dense and ripe; seems like a full dosage, but the impression of sweetness may be partly due to the wine’s thick extract and solidity. Extraordinarily tactile, chewy Champagne that will need several years to harmonize and may ultimately merit a score in the mid-90s….

Tuscany New Releases, Part 1 (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Le Difese is plump, juicy and inviting, with lovely textural richness and volume. Sweet red cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol are amped up by the natural richness and radiance of the year. This is an especially supple, lush Difese. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years.

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Lynch-Bages (Jan 2012)

(a blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.67 pH; 5.54 g/l total acidity; 63 IPT; 13.4% alcohol): Fully saturated deep ruby. Enticing, slightly high-toned aromas of red cherry, menthol and spicecake pick up considerable depth with aeration. Turns a little austere in the mouth, showing a cooler,…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Pungent, high-toned aromas of raw berries, graphite and licorice, with a suggestion of eucalyptus. Then cool and bright in the mouth, but with a surprisingly plush texture considering the wine’s herbal elements. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins that call for four or five years of further aging. Solidly built, classic Lynch-Bages.

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2002 Lynch-Bages shows just a little bricking on the rim. The nose is initially reticent with earthy black fruit, cedar and tobacco, a bit conservative compared to its peers. The palate offers leafy black fruit mixed with sage and black pepper. This feels a little austere and a bit mean on the finish, though…
