Intellect & Senses: Bordeaux With Time (Mar 2025)

The 1995 Lafon-Rochet is quite backward on the nose with rather sultry black fruit, sous-bois and light cigar box scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins and earthy black fruit tones, but there is a slight shortfall in freshness and the finish is beginning to show some austerity. Tasted at La Trompette at…

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good full, deep red. Sappy dark cherry, raspberry, flowers and smoky oak on the nose. Juicy, intense and strong, with good density for village wine. Flavors of dark fruits and bitter chocolate. Possesses firm mineral spine and sound balancing acidity. Finishes with very good length.

2006 and 2005 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2008)

Opaque purple. Explosively perfumed, pungent bouquet of ripe cherry and candied plum, with exotic Asian spice and incense notes adding complexity. Intense dark fruit flavors boast remarkable sweetness and depth, becoming spicier and broader with air. I tried to find the tannins but kept hitting a wall of deep berry fruit. This is superb.

Santa Cruz Mountains: The Compelling 2018s & 2019s (May 2022)

Early tastings suggest the 2018 is a Monte Bello built on linear, savory intensity more than volume. I very much like the…

Santa Cruz Mountains – The Chameleon (Oct 2024)

Ridge’s 2022 Chardonnay Estate is full-bodied, deeply flavored and ready to play. Still reductive and overtly displaying American oak’s vanilla/dill hallmarks, there’s a tempting sweetness to its honeyed peach, chamomile and wood spice tones that makes this very satisfying today. Ample textural harmony rides through the finish, embracing the palate like a warm hug. That…

Santa Cruz Mountains: The Compelling 2018s & 2019s (May 2022)

The 2020 Lytton Springs is a very pretty wine. Bright floral and spice accents open first. Silky and medium in body, with plenty of persistence and fine balance, the 2020 is pretty impressive, especially for the year. Zinfandel character really drives the feel in 2020. A burst of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, cinnamon and dried…
