Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

(a 55/45 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon; 90 IPT): Fully saturated ruby-purple. Richer and deeper on the nose than the Alter Ego, offering ripe blackberry and chocolate aromas accented by minerals and violet. Juicy and intense, with lovely lift to the small berry fruit flavors. Finishes pure and long, with smooth tannins and lovely…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of smoky black cherry, black olive, minerals, cedar and game; I was reminded of a Montecristo No. 2. This really presents the full range of young Montrose aromas. Dense, sweet and layered; really reverberates on the palate. Very ripe on the aftertaste; subtle, complex flavors go on and on. The tannins…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Trotte Vieille has an arresting bouquet that initially puts me off. However, upon closer inspection, it coheres and gains freshness, perhaps due to a healthy dollop of Cabernet Franc in the blend. It works. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, quite rich yet fresh thanks to the acidity. It lacks some nuance…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Trotte Vieille is fabulous. Rich, inky and explosive, the 2020 offers up an exotic mélange of jammy dark fruit, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, cloves and incense. Sumptuous and flamboyant to the core, Trotte Vieille has a ton of personality. Big chocolaty tannins frame the sumptuous finish. This has come together very well.

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Pape-Clément Blanc is rather bland on the nose compared to its peers, missing some mineralité and tension. The palate is better with a lightly spiced entry, moderate depth and some attractive pithy notes toward the finish. It's just the aromatics that are at fault here. I’m not certain how representative this bottle is…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Pape Clément Blanc is a very pretty wine, but it has never excited me, as the direction feels unclear. Green apple, tangerine oil and hints of passionfruit open. Overall, though, I find the 2020 lacking in depth.
