2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Good deep red. Expressive aromas of blackberry, violet, leather and spices. A step up in energy from the Haut-Doix, with sweet dark fruit, cooked beet and spice flavors complemented by game and leather nuances. Here the wine’s saline element is nicely supported by primary fruits. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lingering notes…

2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Talbot is powerful and rustic, just as it was en primeur. Black cherry, plum, grilled herbs, leather, menthol and scorched earth add to the wine's brooding, potent feel. The 2017 remains a rather rustic Saint-Julien. It will be interesting to see if the tannins soften over time. For now, there is a good…

Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Talbot offers blackberry, bilberry, pencil shaving and gravelly scents on the nose. Nicely defined it misses a little intensity compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins. I admire the freshness of this Talbot, although the tarry finish just feels a little short and leaves you wanting for more….

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Flamboyantly rich aromas of orange zest, nut oils, toast, toffee, mushroom, macadamia nut, underbrush and bonfire. Large-scaled, superripe and very rich, with a wonderfully seamless, pliant texture and a deep hazelnutty quality. Huge, slow-building, thick finish hints at great ripeness.

2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Valandraud is sensational. Stunning in its delineation and with sheer energy, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice and lavender all come alive in the glass. In 2019, Valandraud is a towering, statuesque wine that captures all the best the vintage had to offer….

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Valandraud has a generous and oaky bouquet with blueberry and blackberry commingling with vanillary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, velvety smooth in texture lending it a modern sheen, overtly oaky although I feel there is sufficient fruit behind it. This is defined by the winemaking rather than the terroir…
