1996 and 1995 Red Burgundies (Mar 1998)

Medium red. Reticent aromas of berries, licorice and herbs. Juicy, penetrating and intensely flavored; brisk acidity is in harmony with the fruit. A stylish wine, rather light on its feet. Very youthful finish shows strong acidity and a slight toughness.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Domaine de l’Eglise is far better than the 1988 tasted alongside. This is much fresher and vibrant on the nose with black cherries, bergamot, bacon fat, a touch of glycerol and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a touch of cough mixture infused the red berry fruit with clove and bay…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Saturated deep ruby. Expressive aromas of cherry, raspberry, iron and game, with smoky and floral notes. Sweet, dense and musky; has size and concentration but seems a bit heavy. Finishes with chewy but even tannins that reach most of the palate.

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good full red. Spices, minerals and an exotic whiff of peach pit on the nose; showed more dark fruits as it opened in the glass. Supple and juicy, with good spice and mineral lift to the red berry flavors. Offers a restrained sweetness and moderate flesh, in the style of the year. This builds nicely…

The Most and Least Important of Things: Petrus 1897–2011 (Jul 2020)

The 1966 Petrus is often overshadowed by the 1961 and 1964, however, it remains a great vintage that has held up well. It has a much more reserved earthier bouquet than those aforementioned vintages, more black than red fruit infused with clove, autumn leaves and mahogany bureau. It is beautifully defined and noble, offering ash-like/fireside…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Deep ruby-red. Deeply pitched yet rather explosive aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, smoky minerals and chocolate. Large-scaled and plush on the palate, combining an impression of chocolatey ripeness with a distinct medicinal reserve. Finishes with a burst of black cherry and a firm tannic spine that tempers the wine’s sweetness and extends the fruit.
