2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Pavillon Blanc is a very pretty, airy white from château Margaux done in a style that emphasizes energy more than anything else. White pepper, crushed rocks and bright saline accents play off the citrus fruit. The 2019 is quite steely, and yet there are no green or vegetal notes at all.

Bordeaux 2014: The Southwold Tasting (Mar 2018)

The 2014 Les Cruzelles has a simple bouquet, tertiary in style, woodland scents intermixed and perhaps dominating the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, chewy in the mouth at first although it musters more detail towards the lightly spiced, quite saline finish. Like other Pomerol wines it just needs another three or…

2014 Bordeaux: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over (Apr 2015)

Mocha, plums, black cherries, spices and new leather are all wrapped together in the 2014 Les Cruzelles. A deep, pliant wine, the 2014 Les Cruzelles possesses fabulous depth and pure resonance. Exotic spiced notes add nuance on the super-expressive finish. The 2014 is 90% Merlot and only 10% Cabernet Franc, although the flavor and tannin…

Medium yellow color. Brooding aromas of pineapple, pine needles, toffee and nuts. Dense, full and quite dry, with penetrating fruit, hints of oak spice, and powerful acids that have not yet come into harmony. But this extremely impressive young Bollinger vintage shifts into a higher gear on the back end, showing even more flavor intensity…

Champagne: The 2023 Spring Preview (May 2023)

The 2015 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is a pretty dense wine that belies its deceptively mid-weight structure. What surprises me most about the 2015 is how closed it is. In most years, especially warm years, Coeur de Cuvée is quite a bit more open and voluptuous, but the 2015 does not come across like that…

Chianti Classico: Riding Out the Storm (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Tignanello is all class and refinement. Crushed flowers, mint, white pepper, blood orange and cinnamon all grace a Tignanello defined by a decidedly sophisticated personality. The 2022 has started to flesh out nicely, especially in the mid-palate, but it remains very much on the understated side of things relative to most vintages.
