Brilliance in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Jul 2016)

Ridge’s 2014 Zinfandel East Bench is a standout, especially considering its price. Brisk and wonderfully perfumed, the 2014 possesses striking aromatic presence to match its mid-weight personality. This is one of the more silky, refined Zinfandels readers will come across. I can’t recommend it highly enough. At this stage, the East Bench has almost Pinot-like…

2022 Rosé – New Releases (May 2022)

Bright, peach skin color. Fresh pit fruit and red berry scents are complemented by building floral and orange pith nuances. Smooth and open knit, showing good breadth and depth to its juicy strawberry, tangerine and white peach flavors. The floral note recurs on the nicely persistent finish, which features a subtle hint of fennel. –…

Vinous Lockdown Special (Oct 2020)

The 2018 Blanc is wonderfully polished and refined in a more finely-cut style than the 2019. White orchard fruit, lime, mint and jasmine all confer notable freshness. The 2018 is a wine of tremendous pedigree and class, but it needs a good bit of air to truly open up. There is a crystalline energy to…

Exploring Northern Rhône Whites (May 2020)

Light, green-tinged yellow. A powerful scented bouquet evokes violet, ripe citrus and orchard fruits, which are complicated by hints of dusty minerals and saffron. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering densely packed pear nectar, orange pith and honeysuckle flavors that show outstanding clarity and mineral lift. The floral and mineral notes persist on the…

Santa Cruz Mountains: The Compelling 2018s & 2019s (May 2022)

The 2020 Zinfandel East Bench emerges from Funsten Ranch in Dry Creek Valley. It offers good energy in a taut, nervy style. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, rose and orange peel lend nuance. I would prefer to drink this light-bodied Zinfandel over the next few years, before the fruit fades.

Vinous Table: Marino Ristorante, Hollywood, CA (Jun 2018)

Mascarello’s 1985 Barolo Monprivato is a bit more forward in its aromatics than it is on the palate, where the wine still offers remarkable power and breadth, both signatures of the 1985 vintage. This is a good, but not remarkable, example of a Barolo that can be a real show-stopper.
